Since its official establishment in 1898, Olivet Boys & Girls Club has served thousands of families and youth throughout Reading and Berks County.

Our History

Since 1898, Olivet Boys & Girls Club has been transforming the lives of Berks
County’s youth with empathy, education, and fun. By empowering Club members
to reach their fullest potentials in all aspects – socially, academically, physically,
emotionally, creatively – we are empowering them to be well-rounded leaders
who positively influence everything and everyone around them. In transforming
their lives, we are transforming our community.

As we do this vital work, we walk in the footsteps of our founder, William
McCormick. His deep love for our community and profound empathy for all
people led him to create a space where kids could gather, play, and just be kids
– under the watchful eyes of mentors and away from the trouble found in the
streets, pubs, and pool halls. He undoubtably changed – and saved – countless
lives in his lifetime, even at the detriment of his own.

In the winter of 1923, Mr. McCormick put himself on the line to save a
neighbor in need: an older woman, freezing and alone, whom he encountered
on his way home from the Club. After purchasing and shoveling coal for her all
through the frigid night, he developed pneumonia. Days later, he succumbed to
his illness. Though he was still young at just 57, William McCormick passed at
peace, knowing he had fulfilled his purpose: to give back until there was nothing
left to give.

That profound selflessness is what guides us today. Olivet has grown from a
hotel hall to a church; from one club to six – with a 100-acre camp to boot. We
are proud founding members of the National Boys & Girls Club of America, and
our dedicated staff, Board members, and volunteers support thousands of young
people each year. And yet, despite all that change, all these 127 years later, each
and every one of us keeps Mr. McCormick’s values alight like an eternal flame.
These torches built by love, empathy, and service guide us as we guide our youth
to brighter futures.
