Start your engines, or in this case, sander.

On Saturday, July 13, a power tool staple will be grinding the track as people ride it. It’s a tradition going on year 32 at New Bertie’s Inn in Exeter Township.

New owner Patty Miravich keeping the racing tradition alive since taking over the restaurant a few years ago. This year, she’s appealing to the young and old.

“We’re making it very kid friendly,” said Miravich. “We’re have some face painting that we’re going to do and there’s a lot of fun things for kids to do either here, as well as watch the belt sander race.”

It’s not just held for fun. A charity is chosen to raise funds for. This year it’s all for the Olivet Boys and Girls Club.

“This helps to support operations for our summer camps, we have a 10-week summer camp, which we’re currently operating, and it helps to sustain and enhance the programming that we can offer for the kids, things like additional field trips, program supplies,” said Nick Philippides Vice President of the Olivet Boys and Girls Club.

The additional funds will also help with the after-school program.

They’re expecting a big crowd. Miravich said,

“We’re averaging about 500 to 600 people every time we have the Belt Sander, so it’s great.”

Doors open at 10 a.m. and that’s when the bands will start playing. The actual race starts at 1:30 pm, and is expected to go for about and hour and a half.

“We do have some teams that need a rider.”

So it’s not too late to get in on the action.
