Reading, PA- The 75 kids from the Olivet Boys & Girls Club’s Oakbrook Club knew they were in for some holiday fun.
But they didn’t know they’d get to share a little of that Christmas joy with someone they love.
The United Way of Berks County’s Emerging Leaders United – made up of United Way supporters between 21 and 45 years old – hosted a holiday event for the kids Saturday afternoon in Kraras Hall at St. Constantine and Helen Orthodox Church in Reading.
“We just wanted to give them a good time,” said Jessica Heil of the United Way.
There were crafts, cookie decorating and a visit from Santa. And each youngster got to take home a stuffed animal and a book.
But it was what they got to take home for someone else that the kids were most excited about. Thanks to a donation from Boscov’s, each kid was allowed to visit a “pop-up” shop and pick out a present for a loved one.
“The shopping was a surprise,” Heil said. “They were so excited when they learned they were going to get to take a present home for one of their family members.
“It was amazing. One of the kids said it was the best day ever.”
