Olivet Boys & Girls Club Teens Raising Money and Raising
Awareness About Deadly Diseases
Reading, PA—August 18, 2008: Teen members of Olivet Boys & Girls Club’s Keystone
Clubs are participating in the 2008 National Keystone Project
“Caring for Others.” This is a youth-developed,
youth-led initiative created to help build awareness and
combat AIDS, malaria and other life-threatening diseases
through fundraising and volunteer activity.
Teens from the PAL and Clinton Street Clubs are participating
in this national initiative. Teens from the PAL elected
to raise awareness and money for measles after learning
that each year an average of four million children die of
measles in Africa due to lack of immunization. All of the
money they raise will be donated to the American Red Cross
Measles Initiative.
An informational table will be set up at the PAL Unit Prom
from 1:00-3:00 on Thursday, August 21st to educate members
about measles, and accept donations.
Teens from the Clinton Street Keystone Club elected to
focus on malaria. In addition to raising awareness about
this deadly disease, members set a goal of raising $400
to purchase 40 mosquito nets to be donated. They are already
three quarters of the way there, having raised over $300.
Earlier this month the teens manned an information table
at the “Hanging in the Hood” event at the Club’s
Clinton Street Pool. They also accepted donations during
“National Night Out.”
A Bake Sale to raise money for mosquito nets will be held
on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, August 20, 21, and 22
at the Clinton Street club, 677 Clinton Street, Reading,
from 1:00-5:00.

About the Mentoring and the Arts Program:
Olivet Boys & Girls Club’s Mentoring and the Arts
Program combines the personalization of mentoring relationships
with positive adult role models and the therapeutic quality
of group art activities to provide a holistic approach to
working with high-risk students. The program began in 1998
when the Police Athletic League of Reading and Berks County
(now Olivet Boys & Girl’s Club’s PAL club)
joined forces with 15 other organizations to address the
serious and growing problem of juvenile delinquency and
the alarming high school dropout rate.
The Mentoring and the Arts Program incorporates four components
designed to increase healthy, positive self image of youth
participants and improve their ability to employ positive
problem-solving and coping skills. These components are:
mentoring; involvement in the arts; family involvement;
and a community-wide support system.
In addition to mural painting, Mentoring and the Arts students
participate in visual and performing arts, digital music,
photography, cooking, art history, and other artistic genres.
The first mural by Mentoring and the Arts students was painted
in 1998 on the 3rd & Buttonwood Streets building that
will be the site of the 10th anniversary mural painting.
Since then, the youth and community volunteers have painted
nine additional murals throughout the City of Reading under
the direction of various artists and Olivet Boys & Girls
Club staff.
A special limited edition 10th Anniversary poster featuring
“The Murals of Reading” will be available for
purchase. Please visit www.olivetbgc.org
